Discovering the Sir Miles Warren Gallery in Christchurch, New Zealand

by The REJIGIT Blog

November 2023

A superb and delicate art gallery which rests comfortably and almost secretively within Christchurch’s central business district and shielded by an architecturally designed garden.

Sir Miles Warren died in 2022 at age ninety three. After achieving his architectural qualification he established the architectural practice Warren & Mahoney in 1955. The practice went on to design many notable New Zealand building projects including the Christchurch Town Hall which opened in 1972.

In 1975 Sir Miles designed a gallery / living room to adjoin his then central city apartment and architectural practice offices at 65 Cambridge Terrace in Christchurch which now houses the Sir Miles Warren Gallery administered by Objectspace.

A pre 1975 image of Sir Miles in his delightful architectural garden prior to construction of the gallery.

The complex entrance offers little indication of what lies within.

Objectspace at the Sir Miles Warren Gallery is supported by The Warren Trust, Christchurch City Council, Hughes Developments, Cemac Commercial Interiors, Te Kāhui Whaihanga New Zealand Institute of Architects, Athfield Architects and Karen & Hamish Doig.

There is no entrance fee and the gallery hours are Thursday thru Sunday 10am – 4pm.
